The tennis player guide to choosing a new racquet

Step 1: Determine your playing level

In tennis, playing level greatly influences the type of racquet that is suitable for a player to use.  One’s playing level can be determined by a coach or other tennis professional.  If tennis lessons aren’t for you, and you’re unsure, just let us know how long you’ve been playing and how often you play, and we’ll take it from there!

Step 2: The Frames

There are 3 major groups of tennis racquets:

1.       Power/Game improvement racquets.

2.       ‘Tweener Racquets

3.       Players Racquets

Each category of racquets brings a different set of attributes for you as a player to work with.

·         For beginners, the Power/Game improvement racquets are the most ideal recommendation as these racquets are light weight and offer a bigger head size for most optimal hitting area.

·         For intermediate or players transitioning from beginner to intermediate stages, the ‘Tweener racquets are the best choice.  These frames offer slightly more weight and less power than the Power/Game improvement racquets.

·         Players’ Racquets are the heaviest and have the smallest head size of 3 categories.  This gives them the most stability and control of all the racquets on the market.

Step 3:  Demo

Now that we’ve given you our recommendation it’s time for you to try them!  Ask about our demo program and get demoing today!

Step 4: Grip size

Once you’ve decided on a racquet it’s time to determine the grip size.  Every racquet comes in a variety of different grip sizes, they are:

·         4

·         4 1/8

·         4 1/4

·         4 3/8

·         4 1/2

·         4 5/8

The task may seem daunting but one of our employees will be more than happy to assist you with this.  If you are in-between 2 grip sizes, then choosing the smaller one is a better choice.  A grip can always be made bigger (built up), but never smaller.

Step 5: String

Now that you’ve made it this far all that remains is a little fine tuning.  String along with tension will further customize your racquet to fit your needs.  More power, feel, or something more arm friendly are problems that stringing can fix.  Once again, this is something that one of the Tennis Cabana’s employees will assist you with and explain in further detail as well as answer any questions you may have.

You’re done!  See you on the court!
